Description

What the Messianic translations actually do differently.

The NMV, TLV, and CJB compared side by side: real verse samples, verified editions and prices, and a decision guide — written by the translator of the New Messianic Version, who shows you exactly what the translators are doing.

Open almost any standard English Bible to Exodus 3:14: God tells Moses His name — and then translators spend the rest of the Old Testament replacing it with LORD and GOD in small caps. Four hundred years of tradition, and you can read the Bible cover to cover without once encountering the name God gave Himself.

Messianic translations are all responses to that problem, plus one more: the New Testament was written by Jews, about a Jewish Messiah, quoting a Hebrew Bible. The four things they change, in some combination:

  • Names — Jesus → Yeshua. Christ → Messiah/Moshiach. God → Elohim/Elōhīm. Mary → Miriam. James → Ya'akov.
  • The Name — What to do with YHWH: LORD, ADONAI, Yehovah, Yahweh, or the Hebrew letters themselves.
  • Book order — Some restore the Tanakh order — Torah, Nevi'im (Prophets), Ketuvim (Writings) — instead of the Christian Old Testament order.
  • Reading level and lens — Sentence-by-sentence from Hebrew/Greek, paraphrase for readability — or, in the NMV's case, bracketed identifications showing who is speaking.

No translation is neutral. Every one makes choices. This guide shows you the choices, so you can pick the one whose choices match what you want.

Jesus: The God of Abraham, Isaac & Jacob From Verse to Verse: The Testaments tied by the Jewish Wedding Tradtions

The Jewish Marriage and Betrothal Ceremony provides the structure for both the Old and New Testaments. In this course, we will explore how New Testament authors skillfully incorporated these Old Testament themes into their writing by utilizing existing Jewish Midrashic techniques. In addition, we will examine the background and significant contributions of Ezra the Scribe, who played a pivotal role in preserving and compiling the books of Moses, the Prophets and the Writings (aka., The Old Testament). Through an examination of Midrashic hermeneutics, we will uncover the interpretive principles employed by ancient Jewish scribes, including the importance of community consensus in the interpretation of scripture. By the end of this course, students will gain a comprehensive understanding and overview of the Jewish Marriage Theology Thread woven through the Old and New Testaments, as well as the Jewish world during the time of the New Testament and its impact on the biblical text.
